August 1887: Following his father’s death, Arthur’s mother, Hannah Abbott, thanked the public for supporting her husband’s business for 30 years and advised she would be carrying on the firm with her son.

‘Mr A Abbott, Watchmaker and Jeweller.
Over 40 Christmases ago the business now managed by the above first put out its sign, and ever since then it has continued to supply the wants of purchasers in its particular line. A seasonable shipment just to hand is a parcel of gold brooches and links of newest designs. Waltham and Waterbury watches are in stock, also dress, wedding, and keeper rings in great variety. The proprietor invites inspection of the prices in his window before purchasing elsewhere.’
