Other | Grandson of convict, Thomas Walton (and Mary Williams), transported to Tasmania (Van Diemen’s Land) in 1821. Thomas worked as a sawyer, Sheriff’s officer, and yeoman after completing his ten-year sentence for forging notes he had in his possession. He died at his residence in Upper Goulburn Street, Hobart, in 1852, with Charles’s father, William, recorded as the informant of death. It seems Thomas did rather well for himself, leaving several monetary bequeaths to family members in Tasmania and England.
Frank Hobart Walton, Charles’s older brother, was also a watchmaker. August 1891: Charles performed a violin solo at the Temperance Hall, Hobart for a Grand Complimentary Benefit. February 1893: Charles’s sister Alice married Hobart watchmaker and jeweller Herbert Henry Willison. January 1897: Death of father, William, at his residence, Corby Hall, Upper Goulburn Street, Hobart. March 1904: Death of mother, Rosina Walton. Despite convict origins, the extensive property bequeathed was a testament to a family who had done well. Corby Hall, the family home, was advertised for sale by auction as part of Rosina’s estate in early 1908. |
Death | 11 March 1898, Hobart Hospital, recorded as a 26-year-old violinist, last known address Goulburn Street.
Cause of death: Typhoid fever and exhaustion. Burial: 13 March 1898, Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Hobart.
