October 1833: John travelled from New South Wales to Van Diemen’s Land on the ship Portland, when it suffered wreckage east of the George Town Heads. There were two fatal casualties, the young daughter of Mr and Mrs Cox of Clarendon, and the ship’s carpenter. December 1833: Opened an ironmongery warehouse at the lower end of Charles Street. Stock advertised for sale included watchmaker’s tools and parts. October 1840: Commenced business partnership with Richard Scott, sail maker, and ship chandler. Relocated to New South Wales. |
