Other | The Canberra Times 3 April 1978 – 6500km job trip paid by CES: ‘Perth: The Commonwealth Employment Service recently flew a 19-year-old apprentice jeweller from Tasmania to Bunbury for a job interview. The 6500km road trip which cost about $450 was a success. The apprentice, Miss Joanne Mead was flown back to Bunbury last week and she will begin work today. Miss Mead was the only applicant for the job after several months of advertising. A Bunbury jeweller, Mr Colin Mitchell, had been seeking a jeweller for his expanding business. When nobody answered CES advertisements he tried to sponsor a British migrant, but Australian authorities in London told him there were no British jewellers waiting to migrate to Australia. The CES, which had checked its offices for unemployed jewellers, found that Miss Mead was looking for a job through the CES office in Devonport. She was in the 3rd year of her apprenticeship. Miss Mead was flown to Bunbury about two weeks ago under the relocation assistance scheme. After an interview with Mr Mitchell and a look around Bunbury she returned to Devonport the same day. She later agreed to take the job and the CES flew Miss Mead from Tasmania to Bunbury on Thursday.’ |
