The Examiner (Launceston) 26 January 1850:
‘TIME PIECE. An eight-day regulator has been received by Mr Matthews, watchmaker, Brisbane Street, ex Elizabeth Thompson. This time piece is the manufacture of an eminent metropolitan workman and is so constructed as to maintain power during the operation of winding; it has dead beat escapements, jewelled pallets, adjusted crutch, mercurial pendulum, and a vibrating scale; the weight of the mercury in the pendulum tube is nearly eleven pounds and being a late invention, it combines all the modern chronometrical improvements, and is warranted to keep the most accurate time. It is not for sale but has been purchased by Mr Matthews for the use of the public, so that all parties may have an opportunity of regulating their clocks and watches. The prime cost of the regulator was £50.’
