January 1858: Robert Lindsay broke a three-year employment contract with Thomas Hamilton by absenting himself from work. Hamilton didn’t press charges, and Lindsay pleaded guilty and promised to return and fulfil his agreement.

Approx. 1858-1859: Employed by the Abbott family.
Approx. April 1859: Gave notice to the Abbotts and moved to New Zealand. According to the Abbott diaries, arrangements were made with William Oliphant, previously employed by William Cole, to take his place.
