Launceston Examiner 28 April 1874:
‘Mr Rocher.
Dear Sir, – Would you please convey to the Council my apologies for any irregularities in town clock last week, for on Wednesday the clock suddenly gained 6 1/2 minutes. I cannot account for this in any way unless the clock was tempered with by some of the parties having access to the tower of the church. The clock’s previous good performance this last three years must exonerate it from all blame, the rate of town clock during that time being about 5 seconds a week slow. However, I will set it to mean time today at 12 o’clock , I have had the mean time taken on Saturday. –
Yours respectfully,

Death Approx. February 1879.
John Day went missing while travelling from Launceston to Hobart by train. His body was discovered on 9 March in the bush near Tunbridge. His death record states the cause of death as ‘visitation of God.’
