Max was a junior bicycle mechanic and watchmaker’s assistant before enlisting for war service in early 1944. The Recruiting Centre received his application to enlist before he turned 18 and responded that it would be dealt with on 1 February 1944; by 16 February, it was official. Max’s employer before the war was Mr Alexander Dalgleish, clock and watchmaker of 69 Elizabeth Street, Hobart. Royal Australian Air Force training: Trainee Fitter course and a 16-week Instrument Repair course at No. 3 School of Technical Training, Ultimo, New South Wales. 3 April 1946: Max was described as having very good character and his trade proficiency superior on discharge from service. Following the war, he trained as a watchmaker under Jack Stanwix.Max’s twin brother, Rex Alfred Dart, was also a watchmaker.Member, Horological Guild of Tasmania.1966: Max and Gloria Dart purchased the Darcey jewellery and optometrist business and changed the name to Darts Jewellers. 1970s: Apprentice, Gavin Leigh Bell. David Dart and Bianca Dart owned Darts Jewellers after Max and Gloria retired in 1984. See Darts Jewellers |
