Cornwall Chronicle 10 November 1855:
‘Charge against Mr Ahong. 

Yesterday, Mr John Ahong, watchmaker, of Wellington Street, was charged by Mr Hughes, who follows the same business in Elizabeth Street, with receiving or buying a stolen watch, which the latter had missed previously out of his case. Mr Ahong said, he got it from a bushman, in exchange for cash and another watch. He was liberated to find the bushman, and the watch remains in the hands of the police.’

February 1856: John’s business stock, including clocks, watches, and household furniture, was advertised to be sold by auction.

January 1859: A ring and quantity of rice were stolen from John’s business premises in Elizabeth Street. The police found the items in the offender’s possession; he was sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour
